Darren Rodwell, right, receiving his award last night
Darren Rodwell was unveiled as the winner of the prestigious prize last night at a ceremony organised by the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) to honour councillors across England and Wales.
Cllr Rodwell has been the leader of Barking and Dagenham Council since 2014, four years after he was first elected as a Labour representative in the borough.
The LGiU said he won the award, from a shortlist of six leaders across the country, due to his “evident passion for local government, which shone through in the nominations he received.”
The Youth Zone and improvements to housing were cited among his achievements from the past year according to the LGiU.
Jonathan Carr-West, Chief Executive of LGiU, said: “I would like to extend my most sincere congratulations to Cllr Rodwell and thank him for his commitment to local government.
“We look forward to hearing more about his continued accomplishments in the future.”
