Forensic officers have spent much of today analysing an area of land by a block of flats in Rose Lane, near Whalebone Lane North, after the attack in the early hours of this morning.
Police were called at 3.38am to reports that a woman had been assaulted.
It is not known how serious her injury is.
Witnesses say a forensics tent has since been erected, with officers protecting the crime scene all day.
No arrests have been made but officers are investigating the incident.
