Crossrail will not open as planned next summer

The Elizabeth Line is planned to run between Shenfield and Reading

Crossrail has been delayed once again, with the coronavirus pandemic being blamed this time.

The Elizabeth Line, which will run between Shenfield and Reading, will not open as planned in the summer of next year.

The long-delayed new railway was originally due to open December 2018.

A series of issues, however, have pushed that back several times.

The company behind the scheme is blaming a “pause” on physical building work and hasn’t given a new target date for it to open.

Those behind it say the impact of Covid-19 has clearly made the existing pressures more acute.
