The London Fire Brigade were called to the second floor apartment on Stern Close in Barking just before 3.30am this morning (Tuesday, 7 March).
Two adults and two other children managed to get out of the building before emergency services arrived.
They were taken to hospital – The Met Police say none were in a life threatening condition.
London Ambulance Service treated another man at the incident.
London’s Air Ambulance also attended.
Sadly, a child was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.
A three-roomed flat on the second floor of the building was destroyed.
Around 40 firefighters from across Barking, East Ham and surrounding stations extinguished the blaze by 5.20am.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and Metropolitan Police Service.
In a statement, the Met Police said: “Police, in consultation with the LFB, are investigating the cause of the fire.
“Enquiries continue, but at this this early stage, the fire does not appear to be suspicious.”
