Officers were called to a grey Suzuki Swift which had left the road on the London-bound carriageway just past Orsett Cock at 8.25pm yesterday (Thursday, 20 July).
The driver the car, who was a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the car, who is also a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital with injuries which have been described as life-threatening.
The road was closed while officers investigated and was re-opened at 2.15am today.
Essex Police are asking any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to come forward, quoting incident 1462 of 20 July.
