Residents evacuated from Woolwich houses after sinkhole opens up

Firefighters were called to St Mary Street last night (credit: Google Maps)

Residents in three Woolwich properties have been evacuated after flooding caused a sinkhole to open up.

London Fire Brigade were called to a burst water main in St Mary Street at 9.30pm last night (Tuesday, 12 December) which had caused a sinkhole around seven metres deep.

Firefighters from Plumstead and Greenwich evacuated 11 people from three properties and a 25-metre cordon was put in place.

There were no reports of any injuries.

One of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders was used as an observation tower at the scene.

St Mary Street was closed between the junction of Sunbury Street and Kingsman Street whilst crews worked with partners to make the scene safe.

The incident was over for firefighters at around 1am.
