Future of Beam Park station to be debated in Parliament

Jon Cruddas said houses cannot be built without the infrastructure to support them 

A campaign calling for the government to deliver Beam Park station is being brought to Parliament. 

Dagenham and Rainham MP Jon Cruddas will be making the case for the station during a debate at Westminster Hall on Tuesday, 11 January. 

He said: “The station is essential to making a success of the Beam Park housing development and to fulfilling the promises made to residents who have bought homes there. The station is also key to unlocking other housing schemes along the A1306 towards Rainham.

“I have now secured a debate and will be making the argument that if the Tories are serious about imposing housing targets on local authorities, their government must support the social infrastructure and services to go with them.

“The Tory “levelling up” sound bite is all well and good, but actions speak louder than words. They have reneged on their promises of meaningful investment and their failure to deliver Beam Park station risks grinding growth to a halt across the south of my constituency.”

Plans for the station were first put in jeopardy when transport minister Chris Heaton-Harris unexpectedly announced the government had never supported the scheme last October.

The project was first adopted by former Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, as part of his London Riverside scheme in 2015 and it was also part of Havering Council’s Local Plan in 2016.

Last month, Havering Council announced it would not be moving forward with plans to build more homes in the area until it was clear if the station would be built. 

Another £13 million project, which would have transformed New Road into a linear park, may also not be delivered.
