A local community group is going to hold a protest calling for an end to violence against women and girls in Ilford.

Walk it Out will put on a demonstration outside Ilford Town Hall at 11am on Sunday, 28 August.

They will then march to Cranbrook Road to hold a vigil for Zara Aleena who was found dead there on Sunday, 26 June.

The 35-year-old was reportedly killed while walking home after a night out.

“When I heard somebody was murdered in my home town it was too close to home,” said April Mehmet, founder of Walk it Out. “It just made me really upset and angry.

“Why should we not be able to walk anywhere at any time? We should be able to do anything, wear what we want, go where we want without the fear of feeling that we may be followed or attacked.

“I wanted to do a protest to make a difference and make some positive changes in the community.”

April has been meeting with local politicians and police to discuss different ways to address the situation.

She said there should be more workshops in schools and colleges to explain the impact of harassment.

April also wants street harassment to be made a criminal offence to encourage women to report the issue to police.

“Men shouldn’t be able to go around and just think that they can just grope a woman or show pornographic images or whistle or kerb crawl.

“All of those kinds of things need to stop.”

Walk it Out is currently looking for more volunteers. You can find more information about the group and the event online here
