Firefighters tackle flat fire in Ilford caused by candle

Around 70 firefighters tackled a fire in an Ilford flat believed to be caused by a candle.

London Fire Brigade were called to a flat on the eighth floor of a residential block in Ilford Hill at around 1.50am this morning (Tuesday, 17 October).

Seven people, including five adults and two children, left the building via an internal staircase before the Brigade arrived. The group were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.

Ten fire engines and crews from Ilford, Barking, Dagenham and surrounding stations attended to the fire which was under control by 3am.

Half of the four-roomed flat was left damaged by the blaze.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by a candle.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Candles, incense sticks and oil burners are one of the most common causes of fire. It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from anything that can easily catch fire.

“You should also ensure they are in a heat-resistant holder and placed on a stable surface so they won’t be knocked over.
