Bower Park Academy was just one school buzzing with excitement as more than 200 GCSE pupils received their much-awaited exam results.
They were among over 3,000 students across the borough receiving the outcome of their GCSE and BTEC level 2 studies.
The pupils, along with others across the country, started school shortly before the Covid pandemic so their studies were interrupted by a series of school closures from 2020.
Councillor Oscar Ford, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, who visited the school to hear how pupils had got on, said: “Congratulations to students across Havering who have achieved the results they wanted. I wish them happy and exciting futures as they make the transition from secondary school to their chosen path.
“They have come through a very difficult time which, because of the pandemic, has meant they have missed crucial face to face lessons due to school closures, as well as the social interaction that comes with being present in school.
“I know it will also be a sad time for some who didn’t get the results they wanted, but there is help and support available within their schools to help them to decide on their options.”
Bower Park Headteacher Mr Edward Aylett said he was pleased with the students’ grades and that he encourages his pupils to do whatever they want to do, but to be the best at it.
He said: “Pupils are looking further down the line and we can see that we have made improvements in every area. In maths and English the results have been excellent and students have taken to the new subjects such as sociology and technology.
“The teachers’ predictions are better and stronger which helps us to keep track of the students work much better. It is a testament to our teachers that we have got the methodology about what works for our students.”
Among the successes were Richard who received four 8s, three 7s and 3 B grades and is hoping to study maths, economics, history and further maths at Brampton Manor Academy in Newham.
Gemma achieved three 7s and four 8s. She said: “I am elated. I have made my mum proud.”
She now plans to study art, history and economics at Campion School, Hornchurch, before going on to either university or taking up an apprenticeship.
At Hornchurch High School, Headteacher Serena Madhvani, said the school had had its best results to date, with 75% of entries graded between a nine and a four.
She said: “These excellent GCSE results are a testament to the unwavering commitment of our students, their families and our staff. We are immensely proud of our students and wish them all the best in their next steps.
