Former Hammer Michael Carrick to retire

Former West Ham midfielder Michael Carrick has confirmed his retirement at the end of the season.

The Manchester United captain, who made 34 appearances for England, won five Premier League titles with the Red Devils.

The 36-year-old has also won the FA Cup, Champions League and League Cup with his current side.

Carrick won the FA Youth Cup with the Hammers in 1999.

He told the Manchester United website: “I think it’s pretty much already been said, to be honest with you,”

“There comes a time when, as much as you like or don’t like it, your body tells you it’s time to stop playing football.

That’s pretty much where I’m at, which is fine. It’s something you have to accept. That’s where I’m at.”

Carrick is to be offered a place on the Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff.

He also played for Tottenham and has made nearly 500 appearances in the Premier League.
