Emergency services were called to the anti-clockwise carriageway between junctions 27, near Epping and 28, near Brentwood at around 11am this morning (Monday, 16 December).
A 68-year-old man died at the scene and two people were taken to hospital for further treatment.
The M25 was closed in both directions for around six hours while emergency services worked at the scene.
The road has now reopened in both directions.
Essex Police are asking to hear from anyone who has dashcam footage that will help their investigation.
