The 61-year was taken to hospital with a serious head injury last Thursday after reports he was assaulted in the park. He then passed away on Sunday.
Formal identification is yet to place but police have named him as Steven Kennedy, from Plaistow.
An investigation is underway and a post-mortem is due to take place.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Considine said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the park at the time and who might have seen the incident or events leading up to it.
“Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could help us move forward with our investigation.”

Two men have been arrested, one of whom has been charged with GBH and appeared in court prior to the victim’s death.
