In a meeting at City Hall on Thursday 8 November, London Assembly members were told how the airport is working to reduce noise disturbance for people living under the flight path.
Local Assembly member Jennette Arnold asked the airport how they were responding to people affected by the noise.
“Throughout their day there is no let up so when you talk about one or two persistent complainant, they have every right to be consistent, have you lived their lives, do you live under a concentrated flight path?”
Liam McKay, Director of Corporate Affairs at London City Airport explained flights are not taking off and landing all the time.
“We operate with an eight-hour night-time closure and in the first hour of operations again we are restricted with the amount of planes we can fly in that period.”
When planes are taking off and landing during the hours allowed they must stay under a designated noise level with those going over being fined.
The airport’s Environment Manager Tessa Simpson explained the money from fines is made available to the local area.
“We’ve set noise levels that are some of the most stringent in the country and that money then gets put into a community pot and is shared amongst community projects.”
The meeting also discussed Heathrow and its plans for a third runway.
