Around 10 people left the building on East Road after a resident of one of the flats smelt burning and discovered their kitchen was full of smoke.
2 fire engines and about 10 firefighters attended the scene and the fire was under control by 3.37am.
There were no reported injuries, but part of the ground floor of the shop was damaged.
Fire investigators believe the cause was a faulty kitchen appliance.
The London Fire Brigade are warning people to check their white goods and fire alarms.
A spokesperson said, “There were smoke alarms in this property, but they failed to alert the residents to the fire.
“Smoke alarms give the earliest possible warning to fire, providing time to escape.
“You should have smoke alarms in every room where a fire could start, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen.”
