The ULEZ expansion comes into force today
It means that from today (Tuesday, 29 August), anyone who’s vehicle doesn’t meet ULEZ standards will have to pay £12.50 per day to use their car in the Zone.
London residents with non-compliant vehicles can apply for financial support to upgrade to new, eco-friendly vehicles – with more than 15,000 applications received in the last week alone.
The scrappage scheme has however been met with controversy as it’s only available to those that live in the city, so people and businesses outside of the borough are not eligible for the support.
Nearly £60 million has been committed in advance of the ULEZ expansion to Londoners, charities and businesses to scrap or retrofit their vehicles.
In a statement, Sadiq Khan said “the decision to expand the ULEZ was a difficult one, but necessary to save lives, protect the health of Londoners and tackle the climate crisis.
“Toxic air is leading to children growing up with stunted lungs, an increased risk of asthma, cancer and dementia and around 4,000 premature deaths every year in London.
The Mayor has vowed again today to continue being “a doer, not a delayer” when it comes to reducing air pollution and taking bold climate action.
The expansion of the zone has been incredibly unpopular in outer-London boroughs, where public transport links are not as well-connected and readily available as central.
In a atatement, Havering Council said: “Havering has called on the Mayor of London to stop the expansion of the zone, and allow residents and businesses to replace their vehicles in their own time, without getting into huge and unnecessary debt.”
