Police say they seized the large black zombie knife during a “sweep” of the area after attending to reports of 8 males fighting in the town centre.
There were no signs of disturbance on arrival.
Police later stopped several males believed to be connected to the incident although no items of note were found on them.
The weapon was found during a search of the area.
No arrests were made in relation to either the incident or the weapon.
The force launched the Lost Hours campaign last summer to warn the parents there tended to be a spike of youth violence between 3pm and 7pm.
The campaign calls on them to be aware of their children’s whereabouts during this time, after children leave school and before parents return home from work.
The campaign is based around a video featuring local people who have all been affected by youth violence in some way.
In it, parents Peter Chesney and Beatrice Mushiya talk about the devastating consequences of losing a child to knife crime.
A spokesperson for Met Police said: “If anyone has any information which would assist police or knows of anyone carrying a weapon, PS Dear of Romford Town Centre Ward Sergeant, would urge our local residents to report matters to police by either calling 101 or report online or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.”
